SEDIMENTUM is back to bulldoze through three songs in twenty minutes on an impeccably balanced EP. Those long track lengths are completely merited – there’s no stretching for length, no pieces out of place, no riffs that don’t serve the song. Aside from the tastefully sprinkled bits of ambient mood-setting, SEDIMENTUM does not let up here. The tone is set with the absolutely crushing first riff – measured, slow, and dense. This approach allows this record to feel totally pummeling without really even accelerating past mid-paced. Derrière les Portes d’une Arcane Transcendante is filled with enough ear-piquing flourishes and unexpected turns to hold the attention of even the most deranged blast maniac without getting caught up in getting too fancy. The production has the exact right amount of cavernous echo to supplement the heaviness and support the occasional spacey clean guitar. SEDIMENTUM has always been a good band and, if these three tracks are any indication, they just keep getting better. (JG)
