Morbific
“Ominous Seep of Putridity” LP

On their debut album, Morbific doesn’t necessarily sound Finnish as much as they feel it. While they set their sights on American death metal greats like Autopsy and Impetigo, their approach to atmosphere falls in line with demo-era Funebre. The songs dive into thick pools of molasses then achingly crawl out of them, peeling back their flesh to free themselves from the all-consuming muck. There’s a hearty helping of groove on tracks like “Cadaveric Maggot Farm” that sound like a primordial version of Undergang, with meaty riffs and churning rhythms that lend themselves perfectly to the skull-splitting sections of blasting that follow. Gross and catchy in equal measure, Morbific’s debut is proof positive that the Finnish sound is alive and well. (DA)
